Artistry is an aspect of gymnastics that takes time to develop; however, there are a few things you can add to a routine to automatically elevate the choreography. Whether you're working with gymnasts who are still developing their artistry, or those who excel in it, these subtle changes can elevate any routine, making choreography appear more deliberate and expressive. By adding these simple adjustments you can make a significant impact on the overall finesse of a routine.
I call them my Golden Nuggets :)
1. Eye Focus
Body language speaks louder than words! Looking at the ground makes a gymnast appear less confident. Want to look confident? Simply pay attention to eye focus. This small adjustment can make a huge difference in how the routine is perceived, as it reflects a level of self-assurance that commands attention. If your gymnast isn't comfortable making eye contact with the audience or judges, simply have them keep their eyes off the ground, and you'll still notice a positive difference!
2. Sternum lifted
Another tip to elevate artistry is to lift the sternum. Think of a string pulling from the chest at a 45-degree angle to the ceiling. This subtle adjustment can make movements appear more confident, enhancing the overall performance and significantly impacting the expressiveness of the choreography.
3. Energy through your extremities
There's a difference between a tight arm or leg and an extended arm or leg. Visualize energy flowing through the fingers and toes, reaching out beyond the body. This mental picture will help the overall extension and cleanliness, making the gymnast appear more precise and controlled, and leading to a more polished-looking routine.
These three tips seem simple enough, but initially, it may take some time for your gymnasts to remember them. Consistently reinforcing these tips will help them internalize the adjustments, and before long, they will become second nature. These minor changes will make your gymnasts appear more in control of their bodies, exude confidence, and elevate their overall dance technique.
